What may start as minor tooth decay can lead to serious dental issues, including painful root canal infections and tooth loss. Fortunately, restorative dentistry treatments can repair dental damage, improve oral health, and enhance the smile. Two of the most common restorative treatments for tooth decay are dental crowns and fillings. Although both are highly effective at restoring dental health, one may be better than the other to address your specific needs. To learn more about dental fillings versus crowns, schedule a consultation with Salt Lake City, UT dentist James M. Wright.

Dental Fillings

Dental fillings are one of the most conservative treatments available to treat cavities. Dental fillings are commonly made of silver amalgam, but in recent years, tooth-colored options have gained popularity. This is because tooth-colored fillings are more aesthetically pleasing and safer for the teeth. Tooth-colored fillings are customized to match the color of the teeth and bond directly to the teeth, restoring dental strength and appearance.

Whether a metal filling or tooth-colored filling is being placed, dental filling treatment includes the removal of unhealthy, decayed areas of the tooth using a dental drill or laser. Once damaged areas of the tooth are removed, the tooth is thoroughly cleaned and the filling is placed.

Dental Crowns

Dental crowns may also be used to treat tooth decay, but unlike dental fillings, crowns cover the entire tooth. Because dental crowns are used to completely encase a damaged tooth, they are typically used when decay is too severe for dental filling treatment but not severe enough to require extraction. Dental crowns also differ from dental fillings in that they may also be used as a cosmetic treatment to improve the overall shape, size, and appearance of the teeth. Dental crowns may also be paired with dental implants to replace individual teeth.

When a dental crown is placed to repair dental damage, all decayed portions of the teeth are removed and the tooth is thoroughly cleaned. The tooth is also shaped to allow room for the dental crown to comfortably sit within the mouth. An impression of the treated tooth is then made and sent to a dental lab where the customized crown is crafted. While waiting for the crown to be completed, a temporary crown will be placed. Once the finished crown is ready, a second dental appointment will be needed to remove the temporary crown and bond the customized crown in place.

Which Treatment Is Best for Your Needs?

Although dental fillings and crowns are effective restorative treatments, they aren't used interchangeably. Dental crowns are best suited for minor to moderate tooth decay. Dental crowns are a better treatment option for those with severe decay or cosmetic issues.
