Have you ever noticed blood in the sink when you are brushing your teeth? If you have, you certainly aren’t alone. Most adults will experience some degree of bleeding from their gums at some point during their lifetime. Although a small amount of blood may not seem like anything to be concerned about, if your gums are bleeding regularly then it should not be ignored, as it is a warning sign of a potentially serious dental problem.

What are my gums bleeding?

Bleeding gums can be caused by several different things. Some of the most common reasons that your gums may be bleeding could include:

Incorrect/rough brushing technique

Many people brush their teeth extremely vigorously, believing it to be the best way to get them as clean as possible. However, our gums are extremely sensitive and so catching them while brushing hard can actually irritate them and cause them to bleed.

Brushing in a circular motion is also better for avoiding damage and gum recession.

Wrong toothbrush

Again, a lot of people choose toothbrushes with firm/hard bristles thinking that greater abrasiveness will help to clean the teeth. In fact, they are more likely to damage the enamel on your teeth and irritate your gums. Instead, opt for soft or medium bristles.

Incorrect flossing technique

Flossing doesn’t come naturally to everyone, and using the wrong technique can actually cut the gum or cause it to recede. You should always floss gently, working your way up and down by following the curve of each tooth.

Gum disease

Gum disease is a major contributor to tooth loss in the U.S. and one of the primary causes of bleeding gums. It is a progressive condition that requires professional intervention and treatment as soon as possible to prevent it from worsening.

Gum disease is also one of the most common reasons for someone to experience bleeding gums. Let’s find out more.

Gum Disease

Gum disease is a common, progressive condition affecting almost everyone at some point during their lifetime. Because the symptoms are so mild in the early stages, many patients ignore them until the disease progresses and has a greater impact on their life. In its earliest stage, it is known as gingivitis and the main symptoms are bad breath and bleeding gums.

However, left untreated, gum disease develops into a condition called periodontitis that has been linked to a variety of serious problems that affect your dental and overall health. This includes abscesses, jaw bone damage, tooth loss, cardiovascular disease and lung infections.

What causes gum disease?

Gum disease happens when there is a build-up of sticky, bacteria-filled plaque on the teeth. This plaque irritates the gums and causes them to become swollen, sore and begin to bleed.

When should I see my dentist?

If you have noticed blood in the sink when you brush your teeth on more than a few occasions in a month, then you should schedule an appointment with our dentist for a check-up. This is especially true if you are also experiencing bad breath or a slightly foul taste in your mouth.

Our dentist will be able to give your teeth a thorough examination to check the health of your gums. If you are diagnosed as being in the early stages of gum disease, your dentist will probably schedule you in for a professional clean which will remove any stubborn plaque. You will also be given advice on how to keep your teeth as clean as possible to prevent reoccurrence.

If your gum disease had advanced, it is likely that you will need further dental treatment. Our dentist will be able to advise you what will happen next.
