The history of dentistry dates back several millennia. Here in Salt Lake City, UT, our general dentistry practices do not differ from their ancient origins as much as one would think. Advances in medicine and dentistry happen every day, but many of the same principles still apply. You cannot move forward without knowing where you have been. Dr. James Wright has studied the history of dentistry extensively and uses that knowledge to advance his own treatment techniques.

Some patients take a greater interest in dentistry and its origins than others. If you have ever been curious about how the profession of dentistry came about or how it has influenced our modern practices, we answer some of the more common questions here.

How Old Is the Practice of Dentistry?

Researchers and historians have found references to dentistry in texts that date as far back as 3000 BC. Around 2600 BC, the tomb of an ancient Egyptian scribe labeled him as a dental practitioner. This is the oldest evidence we have of what we might consider a dentist in modern society. Concerns with dental care, however, actually date back as far as 5000 BC.

Who Was the First Dentist?

Pierre Flauchard was a French surgeon. We now consider him the “Father of Modern Dentistry” for his book “The Surgeon Dentist”, published in 1723. This was the first book to outline the practice of dentistry in detail. It included basic oral anatomy and functions, as well as instructions for dental procedures and the construction of dentures.

Who Was the First Dentist in America?

John Baker immigrated to America from England in 1760, becoming the first formally trained dentist to practice in the states. Shortly thereafter, Isaac Greenwood began practicing as the first native-born dentist in America.

Was Paul Revere Really a Dentist?

Yes! Although he may have only practiced for a short time, Paul Revere was, in fact, a dentist. As a silversmith and craftsman, he provided patients with dentures constructed from a variety of different materials, including metals, ivory, and porcelain. He is also credited with the first use of dental forensics to identify a body post-mortem. Because his dentures were unique and handcrafted, he was able to identify the body of one of his friends who was killed at the Battle of Bunker Hill.

When Did the First Dental School Open?

The first dental school, The Baltimore College of Dental Surgery, was established in 1840 by Horace Hayden and Chapin Harris. This institution created the Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree many dentists have today. The school eventually merged with the University of Maryland in 1923.

How Long Has Anesthesia Been Used in Dental Procedures?

In 1845, a dentist named Horace Wells attempted a demonstration using ether anesthesia on a patient during a procedure. The patient cried out in pain though, and the demonstration was considered a failure. A year later, another dentist named William Morton conducted a similar demonstration and was successful.
